RE HONG KONG KOWLOON WATER WORKS

To the Crown Agents for the Colonies,

Whitehall Gardens, S.W.

Gentlemen,

With reference to the proposal to augment the height of the Kowloon Dam, I have the honour to report, replying to your letter of 2nd June 1904, that I see no objection to so doing, provided that the section is increased in the manner as shown, outlined in red on the tracing (central section of Dam) sent herewith.

I may say that I have discussed the whole question here with Mr. W. Chatham, C.E., Director of Public Works, Hong Kong, who quite concurs with me, and further informs me that the adoption of the proposed section will not interfere with any work that has been done up to date.

As regards the proposal to make the Dam curved on plan with the convex side towards the water, this will doubtless tend to augment the stability, but I am of opinion that it would be imprudent to reduce the section in the slightest degree on account of the said curvature.

The amount by which the stability of the Dam will be increased by constructing it on the curved plan is impossible to calculate; I make this statement on the

RE HONG KONG KOWLOON WATER WORKS

To the Crown Agents for the Colonies,

Whitehall Gardens, S..

Gentlemen,

With reference to the proposal to augment the height of the Kowloon Dam, I have the honour to report,

replying to your letter of 2nd June 1904, that I see no

objection to so doing, provided that the section is increas-

ed in the manner as shown, outlined in red on the tracing

(central section of Dam) sent herewith.

I may say that I have discussed the whole question

here with Mr. W. Chatham, C.E., Director of Public Works,

Hong Kong, who quite concurs with me, and further informs

me that the adoption of the proposed section will not

interfere with any work that has been done up to date.

As regards the proposal to make the Dam curved

on plan with the convex side to-wards the water, this will

doubtless tend to augment the stability, but I am of opinion

that it would be imprudent to reduce the section in the

slightest degree on account of the said curvature.

The amount by which the stability of the Dam will

be increased by constructing it on the curved plan is im-

possible to calculate; - I make this statement on the
